However, the Vatican does have an observatory and an astronomy research group, making it one of the oldest active observatories in the world. Interestingly, John Dobson, who sparked the popularity of Dobsonian telescopes over the past few decades, was a monk who was expelled from his monastery for secretly building telescopes.
